Questions and Answers About APEX 2020 The Thirty-Second Annual Awards for Publication Excellence Competition
Sponsored by the Editors of Writer's Web Watch,
published by Communications Concepts, Inc. Best Practices in Print, Web & ePublishing
How were awards presented?
APEX 2020 awards were based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the success of the entry -- in the opinion of the judges -- in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence.
Naturally, entries in design categories were judged solely on the basis of their graphic design, and writing entries were evaluated primarily on the basis of editorial quality.
How many entries were there? How many awards were given?
1,183 entries were evaluated, in the following distribution:
Newsletters: 65; Magazines, Journals & Tabloids: 241; Annual Reports: 29; Print Media: 77; Electronic Media: 99; Social Media: 41; Apps: 9; Websites: 57; Campaigns, Programs & Plans: 102; Writing: 274; Design & Illustration: 134; One-of-a-Kind Publications: 55.
A total of 100 APEX Grand Awards were presented in 12 major categories to honor the outstanding works in those categories. 476 APEX Awards of Excellence recognize excellence in 100 individual categories.

APEX Award notes
How competitive were the entries?
Very. Each year, the quality of entries increases. Overall, this year's entries displayed an exceptionally high level of quality. The APEX judges saw only the most promising publications that professional communicators could enter. From them, they had the truly challenging task of selecting the award-winning entries.
Did low-budget entries stand a chance?
Yes. Many of the winning entries in APEX 2020 were inexpensively produced. The APEX judges often were more impressed by the quality of creative ideas and concepts shown by entries than they were by the expense entailed in their execution.
Many of the award-winning entries in this and earlier APEX competitions were classic examples of good ideas, imaginatively executed, despite limitations due to tight budgets, limited resources and smaller staff.
• APEX entrants automatically receive an email receipt upon payment for entries. However, if you need an additional receipt for your entries, just complete the easy online receipt form.

WINNING IDEAS FROM APEX

“Here is a perfect example of the benefits gained from listening to customers. When research indicated that association members felt overwhelmed by the number of eNewsletters they received, the decision was made to send one redesigned eNewsleter per week. The result was a graphically attractive, significantly improved, customized product. Another amazing element contributing to the presentation of a Grand Award, was that of recognizing that too many ads were competing with the content. Thus, the association restricted the number of ads to allow both the ads and the content to shine. All these wise decisions resulted in an open rate far in excess of industry norms.”
